Collectors Cabinet
New display! Peruvian Carved and Decorated Gourds plus Andean Highland Textiles

Dozens of amazing decorative gourds are currently gracing the Museum’s Collectors Cabinet. Gourds were originally used to store food, salt & spices, or used as drinking cups. Today they are often used for decoration. A dried gourd is traditionally decorated in three ways: it may be left in its natural color and carved by hand, dyed and then carved or carved and then burned to obtain shading.
Beautiful rich textiles including hats, belts, headbands, dolls and purses from Bolivia and Peru line the Collectors Cabinet. These items are popular tourist collectibles today.
This display will run through March 31, 2010
